Hear the World Juniors 2025 on NHL Network Radio and Canada Talks
Welcome again to one of the greatest hockey tournaments on the Planet Earth! It’s time for the World Juniors 2025 Edition. A Boxing Day tradition in Canada, the World Juniors has also gained significant traction with hockey fans in the United States and Europe.
This esteemed tournament, which includes many of the best male hockey players 20 years old and younger, has been officially held since 1977. After being in Sweden last year, the tournament returns to Canada and the city of Ottawa, Ontario…the city of Parliament Buildings, frozen canals (if the weather cooperates), beaver tails, and Senators…hosts the festivities this time. The games will be at the Canadian Tire Centre and TD Place. Ottawa last hosted the tournament in 2009, and Canada took home Gold.
Twelve months ago in Sweden, the United States captured Gold, while host Sweden finished second. Czechia was third, Finland fourth, and Canada fifth. This tournament has recently been dominated by the North Americans, with Canada taking the crown five of the past ten years, the States 3 times, and Finland capturing Gold twice.
Defending champions Canada leads the way with 20 gold medals overall. The Russians (who, for obvious reasons, won’t be participating yet again) are next in line with 13, followed by 6 for the United States and 5 for Finland. Sweden and the Czech Republic both have won 2 gold medals.
Group A consists of Canada, Finland, Germany, Latvia and the United States for this year’s tournament.
Group B comprises Czechia, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Since 1977, the IIHF World Junior Championships have seen some of the biggest names in hockey represent their respective countries. The alumni list of current NHLers is impressive. A short list includes Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Connor McDavid, Peter Forsberg, Mark Stone, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby, Connor Bedard, Artemi Panarin, Eric Lindros, John Tavares, Roman Josi, Mike Vernon, Mitch Marner, Jonathan Toews, John Gibson, Phil Kessel and Dominik Hasek.
Who will add their name to this impressive list? Trey Augustine? Easton Cowen? Which country takes home the coveted gold medal this time around? The answers to those questions remain to be determined, and SiriusXM will bring you the action beginning December 26 on both SiriusXM NHL Network Radio and Canada Talks 167.
To get you set for the tournament, Shane Malloy and Brad Allen once again thoroughly examine the teams and players involved. The World Junior Preview Show will air on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio Channel 91 at these times:
