Kelsey Grammer remembers James Earl Jones: ‘A Magnificent Actor’

Kelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammer remembered working with his friend and fellow actor James Earl Jones – who passed away on September 9 – during an episode of “The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw” on SiriusXM’s Stars (Ch. 109).

“James and I became great friends and there was nothing like working with him,” Kelsey told Jessica. “I had an opportunity to, in a discussion about Frasier’s next season back in LA a few days ago, to kind of honour him a little bit in memory of discussing what it was like to be on stage with him and I cried every night when he would turn to me and say, it was like, ‘I pray you, in your letters, when you shall these unlucky deeds relate, speak of me as I am; nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice,’ and when he would say that, when he’d say that word ‘malice,’ it just was earthshaking. And tears would just, they always came. He [was a] magnificent actor.”

In a 1982 Broadway production of Shakespeare’s “Othello,” Kelsey played Cassio, and James starred as Othello.

During the interview, Kelsey also discussed Season 2 of Frasier, which premieres on Paramount+ on Thursday, September 19.
