Day 1 was marked by big upsets on both the men’s and women’s sides. Notably, No. 4 seed Holger Rune lost in the first round to Robert Carballes Baena who is ranked 63rd in the world and never gone further than the third round at a Grand Slam tournament. And Rebeka Masarova, ranked 71 in the world, earned the first Top 10 win of her career by upsetting No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari.
The current World No. 1 and defending US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz and tennis legend Novak Djokovic – who about a week ago outlasted the upstart from Spain in a thrilling Cincinnati Open final – are considered the favourites on the men’s side. Despite being the top seed and beating Djokovic at Wimbledon in July, Alcaraz enters the tournament as the second betting favourite behind Djokovic (+175 for Alcaraz and +120 for Djokovic).
On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek of Poland, who has held the top spot in rankings for over a year and recently won the French Open, enters this tournament as the favourite. She’s also gunning for her second consecutive US Open victory. But she’ll have to overcome a talented field that includes second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, fourth-ranked Elena Rybakina, and sixth-ranked Coco Gauff.
Over the weekend, Tennis Channel analyst and former player Tracy Austin previewed the entire tournament in an exclusive special for SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio.
