SiriusXM is celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month by jazzing up your April with exclusive specials on Real Jazz (Ch. 67).

Women In Jazz: Women Can Cook Too
The women of Vocal Gumbo, Janis Siegel from Manhattan Transfer, and Lauren Kinhan from the New York Voices present a five-part musical history of women in jazz. Catch a new part premiering every Sunday in April from 10 am to 1 pm, with rebroadcasts on Tuesdays at 3 am, Thursdays at 5 pm, and Fridays at 9 am.

Terri Lyne Carrington Town Hall
Terri Lyne Carrington‘s incredible run of honours this century continues later this month when she is awarded the highest government honour given to a jazz musician: NEA Jazz Master. On Wednesday, April 14th at 8 pm ET, the week before the ceremony, the GRAMMY-winning musician sits down to answer questions from the Real Jazz audience, hosted by her long-time friend and legendary activist Angela Davis. She’ll also announce details of her new SiriusXM Real Jazz weekly series. Hear rebroadcasts of the special on Thursday, April 15th at 12 am, Friday, April 16th at 8 pm, Saturday, April 17th at 2 pm, and Sunday, April 19th at 9 am.
Friday Jam Session: Jazz and Comedy
Funny people who like jazz and musicians who are funny is the theme all month on the Real Jazz Friday Jam Session, featuring Guest DJs every Friday at 3pm and midnight in April.
April 2 – Comedian and Berklee College of Music graduate Eric Andre plays music and talks about his new Netflix movie, Bad Trip.
April 9 – Comedian Alonzo Bodden is a grand prize winner of the show Last Comic Standing and is known for his many appearances on jazz cruises and at jazz festivals as well as his funny public feud with jazz star and humorist Robert Glasper.
April 16 – When Chuck Redd was 21, the vibraphonist brought Dizzy Gillespie home for Thanksgiving dinner. The legendary jazz funnyman came back for the next 10 holidays to eat and laugh with his mom. When his son, Charlie Redd, was 21 he joined the staff of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The two-time Emmy-winning writer joins his father on Real Jazz to talk about his grandmother, Dizzy, and John Oliver.
April 23 – Jamaica’s gift to the jazz world, Monty Alexander is also one of the funniest men in the genre. From being discovered by Frank Sinatra as a kid to getting a record company to sign him because Oscar Peterson said so, the pianist has been associated with the biggest names in jazz. He was also named by Jazz Times magazine as one of the funniest names in the genre. He reveals all the jokers in jazz and plays their music.
NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert
The annual star-studded event premieres Friday, April 22nd at 8 pm ET and features musicians who are awarded the government’s highest jazz honour. The 2021 class includes frequent Real Jazz guest host Terri Lyne Carrington. The drummer is joined by saxophonist Henry Threadgill, drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, and historian Phil Schaap. The virtual event is produced by the SF Jazz Center and is hosted by singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and actor Delroy Lindo. Performers include Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Danilo Perez, and others. You can also hear a rebroadcast on Saturday, April 23rd at 12 am.
The Lowdown: Conversations with Christian
Christian McBride, the multi-GRAMMY-winning bassist, begins a new season of his popular interview/music show just a week before the Oscars. The social-distancing version premieres every Saturday at 12 pm, with a rebroadcast on Tuesdays at 9 pm, and includes Christian with his jazz friends as well as luminaries from the sports and entertainment fields.
April 17: Andra Day and Kris Bowers – The 2021 Oscar nominees join Christian for his season premiere. Ms. Day is nominated for Best Actress for the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Even though Mr. Bowers scored the film, his nomination is as co-producer for the Best Documentary Short, A Concerto Is A Conversation, a film about his grandfather.
April 25: On Oscars weekend, trumpeter, composer, and 2021 Oscar nominee Terence Blanchard joins Christian to talk about his score to the film Da 5 Bloods and his opera that opens this fall season at the Metropolitan Opera.
Plus, in May, hear from guests Eugene Ashe, writer/director of the Amazon movie Sylvie’s Love; legendary Jackson 5 songwriter and Godfather of Harlem actor Clifton Davis, who recently released a new album, Never Can Say Goodbye; NBA Hall of Famer Spencer Haywood; and members of the band Tower of Power, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary.
International Jazz Day
2021 GRAMMY winner and International Jazz Day music director John Beasley returns to Real Jazz with music inspired by the legendary worldwide day for jazz. It’s the 10th anniversary of the event that will be virtual this year. Tune in on Friday, April 30th at 3 pm, with a rebroadcast at midnight.
